Ludwig Van Beethoven is an historic icon of success tainted by tragedy. There’s a story I remember reading once about a performance he did. As most people know, he suffered from severe hearing loss (or more accurately a condition which simulated a loud and distracting din in his ears). Still, in this condition he had managed to compose complex and beautiful pieces, including his 9th symphony. Well on the premier performance of this particular work, once he finished someone had to actually approach him and turn him to face the applauding audience. But in his deafness he was unable to hear anything and he began to cry. Unbeknownst to him, he’d just written and performed a masterpiece that would outlive him by centuries.
I guess to me Beethoven is the definitive struggling artist, putting himself into his creations at a level that no one would ever be able to appreciate or understand like he could. He was all about the process for a crowd that could only hear the results.
Inspiring!
